Chapter Eight

That Friday night the weather reports said a major cold front was passing through our region, but no one could agree if we would actually get any snow. Some reports had us down for several inches of snow and blizzard conditions. Some said we’d get rain. Some said we wouldn’t get an ounce of precipitation. I shook my head as I flipped from channel to channel on the TV. Being a weather person has to be the easiest job in the world. You can be completely wrong about everything and still not get fired.

Snow or no snow, Rachel had persuaded a friend across town to host a sleepover for several of the neighborhood kids. They would be happy watching movies all night, and we got the house to ourselves. “Just in case,” Rachel had whispered to me as she headed out to drop off the kids, the naughty twinkle still in her eye. I felt my crotch tingle as she walked out the door.

Rachel returned home a short time later, and we kicked our kid-less weekend off by opening a bottle of wine.

“Well, still nothing coming down,” I commented as I sipped my wine and glanced out the window for the tenth time in the past hour. “What do you want to do?”

Rachel set her wine glass down. “Well, how about we stick with the plan. We’ll go out and grab a few drinks and have a fun little night?”

I nodded. Neither one of us actually wanted to voice what we were considering doing.

“Well, I’m not sure how much fun we’re going to have. The last weather report I just watched said the storm might miss us entirely now.”

Rachel walked over and turned off the TV, then came and sat in my lap. “Listen. We’re going to have a fun night tonight, whether it snows or not. If something happens, it happens. If not, it’s just like you said—it wasn’t meant to be. Understand? We don’t need anyone else to have fun.”

I nodded, getting at what she meant.

She kissed me then took her wine glass into the bedroom to get ready. I walked back over to the window and stared up at the sky.

An hour later Rachel emerged from the bedroom in a white cashmere sweater with a low scooped neckline, skin-tight dark jeans, and a pair of black suede boots that came up to her mid thighs. She had curled her hair and done her eyes in a smokey dark blue eyeshadow. Her nails were painted a deep shade of red and she had on a delicious smelling perfume that went straight to my crotch.

“Wow,” I commented as she pulled on her coat. “You look amazing.”

She smiled. “Well, I wanted to be prepared… just in case it starts snowing.”

I smiled to myself. Rachel might have been content to leave the evening to fate, but she was damn sure not going to fool me into thinking she didn’t care one way or the other. I knew exactly which way she wanted the weather forecast to go this evening.
